Personal Narrative: My First Basketball Game

The thoughts have started flowing. It’s about time. About time for what you may ask? It’s time for the biggest basketball game in my high school career. Hundreds of thoughts are rushing through my mind as I sit in the locker room of Wells Fargo Arena. Everything around me goes quiet as I zone into the only thing that matters. The game I am about to play. The first round of state basketball. Three words are flowing in my head. My coach has been pounding these words into my head since the first day I walked in the gym “survive and advance.” I know what’s on the line. I know what the community wants. I know we have to win this game to advance. The horn sounds above us. I jump out of my daze and my brain starts running a million miles an hour. It’s game time. My first game ever played in Wells Fargo Arena and also my first ever state basketball appearance. The arena was ecstatic. It was impossible for me to stay zoned in on my game because the atmosphere of the arena was awesome. So many community members made the three hour drive to watch one single basketball game. The starters were sitting on the bench ready to get their names called for introductions. My name boomed over the loudspeaker. The next thing I knew we were lined up waiting for the jump ball, the whistle blew. The game was underway. From there on, all the noise and cheering around me was zoned out. I was focused on the only thing that mattered- the game. The words “survive and advance” kept resurfacing in my brain. Our lead was building throughout the first half of the game. At one point of the game we were up by a whopping 18 points. Our whole team was playing phenomenal; everyone was doing their own job and not one person was trying to do too much. The buzzer sounded at the end of the first half, and our crowd was hyped. We were all running to the locker
