Personal Narrative: My Heart Failure

I am a 67 years old a retired schoolteacher and heart failure patient. My heart failure came on recently. I was accustomed to eating healthy and staying physically fit until I retired. When I became unusually tired and began to experience heart palpitations, I took it as a sign that I needed to exercise more. However, when I exercised more, I felt more drained and washed out instead of feeling better. My symptoms continued to worsen, and over a year, there were a number of near-fainting episodes.

Due to my age and excellent medical history, my symptoms were first thought to be the result of drinking too much caffeine and repeated cold viruses. However, one month later, my symptoms became unbearable and my doctor agreed to run tests to rule out a heart problem.

I found ways to conserve my limited supply of energy. When I had an event at night, I would have to save up energy for it during the day. My doctor told me to restrict my salt consumption and take prescribed medications to control the fluid retention that can accompany heart failure. When I brought up my diminished energy level, the doctor told me to rest when I felt tired. It's very discouraging to be told that nothing can be done. My worsening condition could result in irregular heart rhythms and sudden cardiac arrest. Therefore, my cardiologist recommended a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with defibrillation heart device. The device may improve the heart’s pumping ability, treat dangerously fast, slow, or irregular heart rates.

I enjoyed an active lifestyle and I volunteered in a hospital and schools, traveled, and exercised regularly. But heart failure has changed my life. It drained my energy, left me short of breath, and forced me to spend more time resting. I couldn't do my normal activities. It was almost like I was a whole different
