Personal Narrative: My Immigration To The United States

My last words to my family was “Auf Wiedersehen.” or good bye, before I left to America to marry my wife Lotte. I had to marry her in America because in Germany you couldn’t be Jewish and marry a Christian or anyone German because of the Nuremberg Laws. I moved from Germany about a few months ago and left all of my family and friends because of the new Nazi government that is making things worse for the Jews. Once I got to the United States I stayed in a refugee camp until I got this new job working at a factory in New York. I still remember the conversation with my boss when someone German called me to his office. I sat down in my chair feeling very nervous. At my job I am an engineer that fixes anything and helps maintain the machines in the factory. Since I have been here in America I have not seen my family in Germany and are worried how bad it is there. I have wrote letters to them to try to come to America because of Germany’s leader and of the Nazi party (Adolf Hitler) hating Jews. In the letter I talked about how Lotte and I got married in New York. I think it was hard for them to come because only so many people could come to America at a time because of the quota, but I still hoped they really try to get in. In the meantime I have made many friends here in New York and have got to learn how to speak English. One of the friends I have whose name is Albert, is from my factory that used to live in Germany, but moved from Germany a couple years ago. Before I could speak English he was my translator from German to English for me when I was working on the job. Since then we have been playing cards every weekend because he knew a card game that I used to play in Germany with Daniel and Erika called watten. In watten you are trying to play the majority of the tricks. There is a trump card which is the best in the deck and you try to beat the other person’s card, but if you really want to learn the best way just having to see the game being played. Every couple of weeks I have kept trying to send letters to get them to move
