Personal Narrative: My Integrated Service Learning Experience

My integrated service learning experience during the fall of my junior year made me realize the impact I have on young kids while teaching them the game of baseball. My service learning experience provided me with the opportunity to serve as an assistant coach for a fall ball baseball team for kids ages ten and under. I performed my service through the Cascade Vista Athletic Club (CVAC), where I played little league baseball from ages eight to thirteen. The Cascade Vista Athletic Club, a non-profit organization located in the greater Renton area, provides pony league baseball for kid’s ranging in ages three to sixteen. CVAC, an organization started in 1963 serves community youth by providing a quality baseball program. Each year more than 300 athletes participate in playing baseball, and continue learning valuable life lessons on and off the field. One of the themes that really stood out to me is Call to Family, Community, and Participation. This social teaching focuses on the idea of believing people have the right and duty to participate in society bringing out the common good and well-being of all people. This Catholic Social Teaching connects directly to my service because I served while coaching to help teach kids the game of baseball in my community. My service brings out the common good in people within the community because it encourages the cause to have young kids participate in little league baseball. An effect that I can take away from my service relates to how it affects human dignity and the capacity of humans to grow in their community.
