The lights were bright when I opened my eyes. My vision was blurred but I could still make out the people towering above me. They all looked alike, almost as if I were seeing the same person in different places surrounding me. My hands and legs were strapped to the table I was laying on, restricting me from any movement. I began to scream, but more from fear than pain. A Mickey Mouse band-aid waved in my face. “Look, it’s Mickey,” he said. There was another voice in the background. “We’re almost done.” A few minutes later, everything went black. I was six years old when I awoke during open heart surgery. It was an experience that initiated my interest in anesthesia.
