Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Volleyball Coach

When I first heard about this project I was thrilled to have an excuse to talk to my old P.E. teacher and volleyball coach. I came to know her very well senior year, but I didn’t have the guts to talk to her without a reason. I emailed her, Abby, right away to see if she would allow me to interview her. We set up a time so I could talk to her on the phone since she wasn’t able to Skype. I asked her a series of questions and recorded her answers. Abby has worked at Okoboji High School for 17 years now and is a P.E. and health teacher. She held the head girls basketball coach position from 2009-2014; and the volleyball coach position from 1999-2013. The reasons she resigned from the coaching positions was kind of sad and made me angry as a volleyball coach. We had a losing season and everyone in the fans were not happy about it. They basically started to email her “hate mail” and she couldn’t handle it anymore. When I asked her if it was hard to be a coach, she responded with, “There is a ton of pressure in coaching, everyone wants you to be perfect and have a winning season, but they don’t understand the work that comes with it.” She worked incredibly hard with the girls and it was sad to see her leave something she loved. …show more content…
I didn’t come up with any follow up questions to get even more information, so I had to make them up on the spot. However, I thought I asked questions well and had put a bunch of thought into the ones I asked her. I decided to ask only a couple of closed questions just to learn a few more things about her and to get the conversation started, but I wanted to stick with open questions to have a better interview. One trouble spot was I didn’t know how to paraphrasing somethings back to Abby; I sometimes felt awkward when trying to do
