Personal Narrative: My L Bean Backpack

As I walk through the hallways of school, I am never alone. Even when I’m not at school, I can feel the impact of my companion in my spine and my tight shoulders. My backpack has been with me for four years. It’s outside appearance has been unchanging- big, red, protruding from my back like the shell of a turtle- but the inside has seen many changes. From freshman Earth science to AP Biology, wrenches to lab goggles, and countless english books, my L.L Bean backpack has never failed me. It is almost entirely by necessity that I carry so much around everyday. Starting with my six academic classes, I load in a one subject notebook for each. Eight periods a day, seven days a week, one hundred and eighty days a year of note taking. Maybe carrying them around all day helps cement the precious information inside into my brain. Nearly weightless on its own, this folder only fulfills its purpose when stuffed with a script, loose paper filled with scribbled cues and changes to be made, a flash drive that contains hundreds of sound effects, and my awards from the Guild. Accompanying this theatre equipment in my backpack is a ring of keys that can unlock the auditorium and every closet of sound and lighting equipment I need but cannot carry. In the back pocket of my backpack is my wrench, a book of light gels, and zip ties, all of which have secured a spot in my bag after every light hang and tech session I have attended. Together, the time I have spent using these tools on weekends and late nights sitting in a dark theatre with my peers while we try to make a cohesive piece of art is immeasurable.
