When I, Ayana, was around nine years old, I was brought to America on a ship to become a slave for some rich white person who I didn’t know. On my way to America I met Faraifemi who was also coming to America to be a slave. While on our way there, Faraifemi and I discussed what we thought life in America might be like, he thought life in America would be much more peaceful than at home and we would be given so much more than we were at home and we would have a much better life. I liked the sound of that, so I agreed. The ship finally reached America and Faraifemi and I said goodbye. Only to find out later that we were both sold to the same slave owner, whose name was William. William introduced himself and then started laying down what he called the “ground rules”. We were not allowed to associate with other slaves and if we were caught disobeying any of William’s rules, he said that we would suffer a terrible punishment. I always followed the rules because I was scared of what William might do to me if I didn’t. Even though I always made sure to follow the rules, William still beat me daily. He also provided us with a small portion of food, poor clothing, and not good sleeping arrangements. I went to meet her as soon as the sun went down like she told me and that was the night I escaped from being William’s slave. It was a long and hard journey to get to wherever Madison was taking me, but I trusted her and couldn’t wait to get as far away from my terrible owner,
