Personal Narrative: My Mentor

My mentor teacher is from Calabasas, CA and just recently moved back to Arizona after living in New York for 7 years. In New York, she wasn’t a full time teacher, but she did substitute. Before moving to New York, she taught third grade at Kyrene de la Mariposa. After this year, she’s hoping to move schools so she doesn’t have such a long drive to work in the mornings.

In my internship classroom, we have a kid who likes to sleep in class. Obviously, this is not generally tolerated unless there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. Most of the time we can get him up, no matter how defiant he is, but there are times where it’s just impossible to awaken him because he’s fast asleep. My mentor teacher told me one time that his mom lets him stay up however late he wants, so he goes to school tired and can’t keep himself awake because he only got 4-5 hours of sleep at most. I

I really don’t know what the best approach to this situation would be because you can’t have a kid sleeping in class, but you shouldn’t just yell at him to stay awake either, especially if he can’t physically stay awake on his own. Sometimes the vice principal or the principal will come in and they’ll take him to the nurse and he’ll sleep there until he gets up or until they wake him up and try to get him back on track for the day. We’ve noticed that this is more of an issue after a school break because he sleeps less and really has to get back on track with the school schedule and going to bed at a decent hour and getting up early. Getting him on track to learn is always really hard, even after just the two day weekend because he’s usually totally thrown off schedule for the week. He doesn’t ever get his work done, but that’s
