We have many colleges today that specialize in specific career paths. If I were to create a new college curriculum, it would be particularly focused on foreign missions. As a person who has been to a third world country and seen the struggle people face to simply stay alive, I feel it is extremely necessary to render aid to the people living in such poverty. When traveling to other countries it is imperative to learn about and to respect the culture and lifestyles of the general population. Some of the courses offered at this mission college would include Religion and Culture Studies, Psychology, Language, and Medical Basics including chapters on culture in medicine. Going into a land without regard for the customs that have been developed can lead to hostile relationship with the indigenous people. In 2012 I took my first mission trip to Guatemala. When visiting the Mayan cultures, we were instructed to wear modest clothing because that is what is required of their culture. If we hadn’t worn this modest clothing, we would be risking a good relationship with the Mayans. Without knowledge of these types of customs, we could easily offend many cultures that we are trying to influence. The people that I have seen on my trips have lived a grueling life, to work form an optimal position would require a person who can properly console the afflicted. The college would have psychology courses to ensure that students can give the best, most comforting care to those who have suffered so much. Though this may not be the main focus of the college, it will make a significant difference in the relationships that are
