I belong to a community which, in spite of being an ethnic minority, makes up the majority of the workforce in STEM fields. As a first generation Indian American, this is the community I belong to. The Indian American community is the most socioeconomically successful minority ethnic group. Much of their success is attributed to having strong marriages, maintaining solid connections with their families, supporting one another through social networks, and placing enormous emphasis on education and hard work. There are very high expectations and standards for children, which push them to achieve above and beyond. For most in the community, perseverance and making the best of everything they had is the only way to achieve a comfortable life, a significant occupation, and a good social status. Unlike in their home country, they do not define one another based on caste, religion or language. Instead, they view one another as family. …show more content…
All my values and beliefs are influenced by the culture in India, where my parents grew up. I am an integral part of this community, play an active role in the association, and do my part to represent and serve it. This Indian American community is full of life, color, and diversity. I proudly showcase this culture of mine, with its storied past and rich present. The fusion of my Indian heritage and American lifestyle has shaped my personality and defined who I am today. The determination and effectiveness of our community to pass on this rich and radiant culture to younger generations puts us in the forefront.
