Personal Narrative: My Passion In My Band

I get three minutes to relish in my passion. Every Friday night before the halftime show, my band breaks off into sections for three minutes. As soon as our band director calls for section time, my voice yells, "Mellophones, Circle up!" Quickly, an egg shaped form begins to fold around me because even though we have had countless opportunities to make an actual circle, the best we can do is form an egg. After the formation of our Friday night egg, the two other seniors join me in the center to mix up our pride, then begins the ritual of passing it out. The three seniors, including myself, turn to each other and take a mouthful of pride from our neighbors cupped hands, which just looks like we are taking a mouthful of air but with symbolic meaning. A minute has passed. As if a sudden electricity has struck us, the three seniors race apart and travel steadily around the egg raising our cupped hands to the mouths of our section so that they too can get their weekly dose of pride. Band has made me a leader both inside my band program and outside of it. I have found a new passion in teaching and mentoring because of the leadership opportunities that band has provided me with. Being a leader in band is a tough job, and if it seems easy, I know I'm not trying hard enough. Making sure that every individual in a section of 28 kids grades freshman through senior are all working and performing at their best while simultaneously making sure that you yourself are working and performing your hardest is a major challenge for anyone let alone a high school, who is on that emotional rollercoaster commonly referred to as the "teenage years". However, band pulled through for me again teaching me to focus on the task at hand and to consider what I can do today rather than what I want to do
