Personal Narrative: My Personal Statement

Personal Statement As a child I have always wanted to help other people. Growing up was great till I was around the age of 8. This time was tough because this was when my parents decided to separate. At the time, my mother decided to move my sister and I away from chicago because she has been living here for such a long time and everybody knew my father was and since they were separating she didn't want people to remind her about him. One night my mother packed our luggage and decided to move us to detroit. The first few days we were in detroit we stayed at my great uncle’s house so we could get settled down and find a school for my sister and I to go to. After boarding the next plane my sister asked me when we would be going back to nigeria but i didn't know how to answer her question, i just told her “soon”. Arriving at the airport, we were happy to finally get off of the plane. when we got to detroit my aunt didn't hesitate to make us feel as comfortable as possible,we got into great schools,she made sure my sister and I spoke to our mother at least once a day, went to church regularly, visited families during holidays, she even had a surprise birthday party for me. But me and my sister still felt uncomfortable there. i called my mother one day crying to her and explaining how we didn't like being there in detroit, . my mother told me that the only options we have is to go back to nigeria or go live with our father in chicago. it was a tough decision for us to make because we really wanted to go back to nigeria but my mom explained to me that if we come to nigeria that we would hate the schooling system so our best bet was to go to chicago. after being told that, i called my dad(knowing i havnt spoke/seen him for 5 years) and explained to him the situation on how we went to nigeria, came back and needed somewhere to live because we felt
