Personal Narrative: My Soccer Journey

As long as I can remember, soccer has been an important part of my life. From playing on competitive recreation teams, to playing on school teams, soccer has consumed much of my free time. Throughout my soccer journey, I have experienced many triumphs, as well as faced many obstacles. There is one event has shaped me as a goalkeeper as well as a person. Witnessing others quit the team when faced with adversity and competition, inspired me to work even harder than I thought imaginable.

My high school junior soccer season started off like many seasons before, I competed in summer league games, a brutal team camp and intense tryouts before the team was announced. This year seemed like we were poised for great success, since many of the previous

As the first game approached, I anxiously awaited the announcement of the line up. As the announcer called out number 1, Ben DeRosia, I knew my perseverance and hard work had paid off! I’m not going to lie, it was a difficult transition for the team. I had to regain their trust. After losing our first six games, it finally happened, I had a breakout performance. I made numerous, heart-pounding stops and several difficult saves. Even though we lost the match, both the coach’s and the team’s confidence in me began to increase. As a result, we were able to improve as a team, win most of the conference games, and make it to the state playoffs.

I have definitely grown and matured during this process. After many hours of self reflection, I now see the rewards of hard work and determination. I will take all the lessons I have learned playing soccer with me into my adult life. I know I’ll have to continually work to improve my skills, in order to become a successful, productive member in college and in life. I also learned that when you are challenged, finding a way to persevere and focus on finding a solution is a much better
