Personal Narrative: My Training Journey

Ever since I came to the United States, I have experienced so many great things; one of them was that I joined the U.S army. I joined the army when I was a high school junior and had only stayed in the U.S for 2 years. I was still learning the new language and culture. Therefore, I used to have a tough time during my training journey. In order to graduate the army basic training, I needed to pass the physical fitness test, the rifle shooting test and participate in every mission, training course. The most important thing was that I always had to follow every commandment from the drill sergeants which mainly was punishments. Due to the lack of English, I had a hard time to follow my drill sergeants’ guiding. Therefore, I wasn’t able to understand and execute their requests when they always yelled and screamed their words. Luckily, I met several great people who later became my best battle buddies and a great help for me to get through the training process. They helped me with most of the paper works during our reading process. There were a lot of questions that I had either never seen before or couldn’t understand them. The reading process was really important since they had to check my health and background before I could move to the training process. They also motivated me to do every mission, training with joy and happiness since I would never have this experience again. Even though the drill sergeants often made fun of me because of my inability to follow their commands, my friends were never looked down on me. They were often voluntarily to help me and treat me with kindness. They made me feel comfortable to adapt to the new training life without any stress. They gave me the fighting, discipline spirit to finish every mission, training course that I had to surpass, and I wasn’t ashamed to say that I wouldn’t successfully graduate the army basic training if it wasn’t for
