Personal Narrative: My Transition Into High School

Entering ninth grade, my transition into high school was a little rough. At the age of fourteen when my parents separated, it did not affect me emotionally. Although, the living situation did. With having to wake up at five am to take four buses from my dad’s house to school, made it difficult to adapt to the workload from school and balance my extracurriculars on the side.

In my culture, the oldest child is expected to help out the most in their household. This idealism applied to me since freshman year. While maintaining my grades and hobbies throughout high school, I also acted as a big sister and a mentor to my younger brother. My weekly routine consisted of going on the bus to take my brother to school and his basketball practices. Aside from the babysitting, cooking, household chores, and transportation, I always had to encourage my brother the importance of an education.

Now as I grew older I realized as a child, it is easy to say what you want to become when you grow up. There is something about the simplicity and reassurance of a young child revealing what profession they aspire to be. But the reality is that it doesn't always go as planned for all. Being the first in my family to continue their education beyond a high school diploma will not only prove to myself that I can achieve aspirations by applying hard work, but it will testify against the stigma many face in my family and others from my community that do not get to reach their potential. To reach this vision of mine, will not only set a good example to my younger brother and cousins. Though, it will show others that any profession is attainable with applying
