Personal Narrative: My Visit To Pentz Elementary School

For my volunteer hours, I went to Pentz Elementary School. I was in a grade 4 classroom for the school day. I chose this specific place to volunteer because I want to be an elementary school teacher when I grow up. Also, this was the elementary school I went to for Grade 5 and 6. I feel being a teacher is related to the human services because it involves a lot of helping others, understanding human interaction, and many more reasons. While I was at Pentz, I fulfilled a variety of tasks including reading and assessing the children's reading level, helped the children with their work as well as marking what they completed. During the lunch break, the teacher I was assigned with for the day was on lunch duty, so I also did that.

I sat down with this boy for a half hour, when at first he didn't understand it at all, we worked on it and I showed him a couple different patterns and thoroughly explained it to him, he finally understood. The most discouraging wart was when I couldn’t help a child because I had never seen he method they use before.
My community involvement helped me to discover and learn more about the careers I went in with; teaching, and being with a dietitian for a day. If I were to do it all over again, I would see about joining with a gym teacher for a few gym classes where I plan to take a kinesiology course as well, to be able to teach elementary level gym class to allow more career opportunities.
I would do something along the lines of teaching because I love working with children and seeing how much they progress over the time you're with them. Also, its not like other jobs where you don’t have many days off. Being a teacher you get weekends off, as well as March Break, Christmas Break and even Summer Break. Also, the novelty that no day is ever fully the same is something else I like. I like changing up activities each day so that things aren't always the same old
