Personal Narrative: My Visit To Tulane

When I visited Tulane, the Tulane experience started well before I got to the admissions building. It started in the airport, getting NBA All-Star themed leis, then continued to my hotel in the heart of New Orleans near Bourbon Street. The music and culture and spirit extends well beyond Tulane University. On my tour, I saw many bikes. Not just one or two, but many. This showed me Tulane is a town, and people aren’t solely relying on buses and cars. After seeing all these bikes, I enjoyed hearing about the study abroad program. I was happy to know how many people participated in them, and that they weren’t just using it as an opportunity to take a vacation. In my information session, the student told us about how he didn't want to major in history, but took a class from a beloved history professor, ended up taking his class every semester, and had enough credits to get a major. I love that there are such wonderful and devoted professors.

Hearing about the community service requirement really resonated with me, because I liked that it was a change from some other schools’ internship requirements. To me, this said that Tulane is a place that truly cares about their community. Tulane isn’t stuck in a bubble, is aware that Hurricane Katrina happened, and is trying to fix the damage. I have always had a very community service oriented mind. At my school we have a day of Service, where we just help out our own community by doing landscaping. I am trying to get this changed by advocating for us going out to communities with greater needs than us, and going to tutor children who are less well off. The fact that Tulane truly
