Personal Narrative: Nothing Gold Can Stay

This quote has a significant place in my heart, because it pushes me to be the best person I can be at all times. Not sometimes or whenever I feel like it: all the time. For me, staying gold means to preserve my morals, put others in front of me, and to stay true to myself. However, when faced with difficult situations, these qualities usually seem to fly out the door, and are replaced with selfishness and greed. When a dying young man said this line to his best friend, he was speaking in opposition to the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” While this is a great poem, I believe it to be false, as I think that people always have the power to make the right decision. On a trip to India many years ago, I was casually sitting outside in the state of Goa, alongside the beach. Along came a commercial fisherman with crates full of crabs, and he proceeded to transport the crates to his truck. As he drove away, his truck drove over a deep pothole, causing two crabs to fly out their crate, and somehow landing in the pothole. A man sitting next to me noticed this, and quickly ran up to the crabs. I followed him slowly, unsure of what he was going to do. He went up to the pothole, and looked down upon the creatures, who were scurrying frantically. It is very frustrating to play against these players, and the most common way out is to just cheat back. This is the method that many (not all) coaches and parents tell their players, including mine. However, whenever I get cheated, I just think back to the philosophy given to me by the man in India. If my opponent is a cheater, he will keep cheating, and if I play fair, I should keep playing fair. If he didn’t change his ways, why would I change mine? This is how I try to “stay gold” as long as I
