On an unusually cool evening in August of my senior year, I walked into Bucknell University’s Coleman Hall. My palms were sweaty, and I could not think over the beating of my heart. As the clock struck seven, the professor walked in. A few weeks earlier I had met with my guidance counselor. I wanted to take a course on a topic my high school did not offer: women’s studies. That day, I signed up for Race and Sexuality. The first class was daunting; after a few minutes I found out that the thirteen other students were college seniors. The nerves did not last long. Just an hour into my first day, I was in my element. In the first of many three-hour classes, we talked about current events and interactions of race and sexuality throughout history.
