Personal Narrative-Relating To Pop Culture

Over the Christmas holiday my family and I gathered around the dining room table and were playing a quiz board game. The game covered a wide range of subjects from Math, English Literature, Geography, History, and even various topics relating to Pop culture. About a quarter of the way into the game, it was obvious I was very knowledgeable about the topics of the game in that I was the leader in answering the questions. The cards were logically simple, beginning with the most general facts about the issue at hand and progressing to very specific details as to, Who am I, What am I, or Where am I? My parents were looking for an outlet to release all of the creativity, energy, and emotions in a productive way. However, theatre was so much more than an outlet, it was my home, my comfort zone, my meeting place for living and learning. The theater experience was my playing ground for growing and dealing with daily obstacles in a language that felt natural. Theater gave me a way to define my academic challenges by restructuring my learning as I was playing out the characters on stage. As I began applying these strategies to my daily life, my academic struggles began to slowly ease up. For example, when solving a math problem I would think of ways to make the problem more logical for me and could usually adapt a theater strategy to help me channel my knowledge to master that math objective. Anxiety has always been an obstacle for me as well. When I’m auditioning for a show, my theatrical training has taught me that the people behind the table such as director, casting director, and music director want to see me excel in my audition. The mental training I’ve received from the theater comparably has taught me that teachers as well expect me to exhibit confidence in my work and this expectation has grown within me as an innate ability to succeed both in the classroom and on the
