Personal Narrative: Representation Of Black And Latino Music

After moving to a new school in the second grade, I tried my first stringed instrument, a 1/4 size violin. Fortunately, my school had a strings program and it remains committed to the arts. However, it has struggled to increase representation of Black and Latino musicians. In fact, less than 5% of the entire student body are African American. Being a firm believer that diversity enriches music, I try to demonstrate through my playing how it has transformed my life and brought joy to others. Lately, I have made it a priority to play my violin for my 16-month-old niece as I know first-hand that early exposure to stringed instruments can be life changing!
