Personal Narrative: Running A Cross Country

The gun went off and I sprinted to get to the lead pack. My eyes darted around to see who my competition was as my feet carried me further and further. The people behind the fences screamed and cheered for their school. My heart racing as I searched for members of my team. Then it hit me, my ankle began to weaken. I slowed my pace down and began to find my pace hoping the pain would go away. More than halfway through the race my ankle was throbbing but I knew I had to finish it, not only for me, but for my team. We made it to cross country regionals as a team and had to finish as a team.
The final straight away was the only thing keeping me from achieving my goal of finishing this agonizing race. It took everything in me to push myself further and further down that last home stretch.

My body ached and it smelled like a dirty shoe, but none of that mattered because I finished the race. It took a lot of determination to run everyday when I knew I could have walked. Determination is a big part of running cross country. I’ve been running cross country for three years and the feeling of determination has yet to go away with all the races I have run. Even when I’m hurting or races are tough Cross Country has taught me to not give up. I have learned that I can use this lesson in other scenarios in my life.
