Personal Narrative: Softball As A Subculture

Subculture is described as values and norms distinct from those of the majority, held by a group within a wider society. Some of the subcultures I belong to are softball, art, and being bilingual. A subculture that has made its mark in America is the sport of softball. Softball was invented in 1887, and it is very similar to baseball. The difference is that it is played in a smaller field with a larger ball. I first started playing softball at 11 years old. I felt that it was one of the first groups I belonged to. A theory about art is that art was create by a man thousands of years ago saw his own shadow took a brunt stick and drew around it. Playing softball helped in my socialization skills, at a point in my life softball was everything. I played softball in the Dominican Republic, and during high school in the United States. During high school, I was very shy do to the lack of knowledge of the language, but softball helped me gain some friends little by little. In my first years, I was in the junior varsity group in softball, but after a year I gained my position to varsity team. During the last years of high school, I got to go on trips with my softball family and get to know each other better. Softball helped me with friendship, teamwork, sportsmanship and developing my leadership skills. Being an artist had shaped my life in an excellent way. Drawing makes me feel free, and look at the world differently when I am actively into it. Helps me being more open minded. During high school, I felt like I fitted in a bit more with people with different cultures due to my drawings. Also, being bilingual had a big impact in my life the first year of recently moving to the united states. In my neighborhood, there was a group of males and females that always played in the park. My father was a very strict parent, but he always let me go to the park. Letting me go to the park allowed me to make my first bilingual friend. After making that new friend, we all became a big group of bilingual kids in
