Personal Narrative: Something Like Me

Out of my own curiosity, I questioned my thirteen years-old niece what she would like to be when she grows up. “Strong, proud … something like you”, she responded. Her response caught me off guard, because I was expecting her to say a lawyer, teacher, or singer. Instead, she inspires to be ‘something’ like me. Feeling honored that after thirteen years of her life, I am making a good everlasting impression on such a young mind. With all of my nieces and nephews, I have made my propriety to teach them to do anything with everything in them. Consistently expressing to them to never look at the odds as defeat, but as a challenge that will be overcome.
In a neighborhood where there are just a handful of high school graduates, let alone college graduates, there is not much of ‘something’ I wanted to be like. Those realities never stopped me, nor will it. I will continue to do my best and work towards greatness. Not knowing who has their eyes fixated on me, I will ensure that the steps I make are commendable enough to make one want to make a difference in their life and others.
