Most undocumented students and families still believe college is not a possibility. The college admission process requires information that a student of illegal status would shy away from. Since most of these students do not see themselves achieving a higher education; their values are different. An undocumented student may drop out of school to get a full time job whereas a legal student might be more focused on grades and getting into a good college. Due to misconceptions and stereotypes of the illegal youth, it is easy to think that the situation of these students isn’t worth reaching out to, but it is called the “American dream” for a reason. Immigrant families risk their lives for the chance of a better future in the U.S. Many families flee from dangerous situations in their country and hope to find shelter and hope in their new home. No one should be denied their hopes and dreams because of their race. An undocumented student should have the equal opportunity to fulfill their hopes and dreams and attend college.
My mother arrived in the U.S at the age of 15; she was very eager to learn and start a new life. My mother moved to California, along with her family, and began high school where she struggled to keep up with her new way of life. Learning English was one of her biggest troubles and even though she knows it very well now it is one of her biggest insecurities. Eventually school became too much for her and she dropped out as a junior. My mother tells me she regrets not having finished school. In the United States it is legal for undocumented students to have a k-12 education. In many cases children who came to the U.S at a very age and finished their K-12 education have very little attachment to their country of birth. These children think of the United States as their country and many times do not even know they are undocumented until they apply for a driver’s license or apply to attend college. Being
