Personal Narrative: The California Highway Patrol

I went on a ride along with an officer from the California Highway Patrol. I got there at around 6:00 pm and they had me signed a waiver form along with my dad and then we headed off on the road. We headed on to highway I-880 and he told me that the most of the times that he will pull someone over for having an expired tag or misusing the carpool lane. About five minutes on our drive he saw someone with an expired tag and pulled him over. He told me to push a certain button underneath his computer in case that something went wrong. He said in the worst possible outcome that I would need to press the button to unlock a gun. After the truck left it had already been about 3 house on the drive along. The officer told me that we were gonna turn around and head back to the office. He decided to take me to get In-N-Out and drop me off at home. Before I got home the officer saw a homeless man in the middle of the street. So he had to tell him to move out of the street and if he did it again he could be fined. The drive along was a cool experience, it allowed me to see how often people violate the laws every day. There wasn't a lot of action during the ride along, but it still made me nervous knowing that we could be in a high speed chase or having to respond to a car crash. I learned quite a bit of how an officer goes throughout their day. They have to be ready for the worst possible outcome and have to wait with a victim as long as necessary. I asked the officer I was with if he had experienced any fatal accidents. He told me about a biker who was hit and when he went to go check to see if he was still alive, but he unfortunately passed. These officers have to deal with so many people, and get a lot of hate just because of the bad reputation they get from rogue
