Personal Narrative: The Chieftain Challenge

Friona has many different events that distinguish us from the many other small towns all around us. There’s the cheeseburger festival, which, being the “cheeseburger capital of the Texas”, is a must. We have Maize Days to celebrate our community’s people and businesses. And then there’s Friona High School’s own Chieftain Challenge that, like its name states, challenges its students. The Chieftain Challenge began with a couple of students trying to come up with a good idea for their Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project. They envisioned the thought of turning Friona into a healthier place. After seeking the help of one of the head coaches, their vision turned into reality. “I thought, ‘Hey, this is my chance to get these kids to do something,’” said Coach Haddock. Each class competes against each other, and amongst themselves, to see who can achieve the fastest completion time. “I feel as though I've made lifelong friendships with the others in my tribal council.
