Have you ever thought that, if born during the time of the World Wars, The Civil Rights Era, the genocide of the Native Americans who’s land we stand on, you would have done something. You would have taken a stand against such injustice. I am the great grandchild of two survivors. I would not be here today had my paternal great grandfather not escaped to America. He was born in Warsaw nine years after the Warsaw pogrom in 1881, a difficult and dangerous situation for a Jew, and a potent one for a Russian Jew. He made two attempted escapes from the country before joining the Merchant Marines and jumping off board the ship as they neared America, floating on a raft till he was picked up by a coast guard. He was sent to a deportation center, escaping to the Midwest before joining the U.S. Navy. He earned a purple heart for his service, and became the first and last foreign born navy soldier to be promoted to Rear Admiral.
