Personal Narrative: The Great Depression

It is the year 1933 and my family and I are deep into the great depression. I live with my big family in Boston; we have no money or jobs. People said things were only going to get better and better during the 1920’s but everything has changed. There are struggles all around, and depression is hitting my parents hard. The great depression is devastating; we have no money or food, and sickness is tearing us apart.

Since the stock market crash a while ago, my parents have had a hard time making money. This year the number of unemployed people has hit a new peak, nearly 15 million, that’s about 1/4th of the US population! Also, thousands of banks have been closing due to bank runs. Like my father, he worked at the local bank and all of our family’s money was in an account there. The stock market crashed in October of 1929 and many banks started closing, including the bank he was working for. When crowds of people flocked to the bank asking for all their money, the bank ran out of money fast. My father lost his job, and all our money was gone. Today our family is barely getting by. I have tried to get a job as a laborer to help pay for some family expenses, but it seems that even with my help it isn't enough. With little money coming in, our living quality has sunken very low.

As of now, these terrible times seem to be never ending. The great depression is crushing our health, our financial position, and our family’s needs. I will continue doing everything I can to try and help my family, but my wound keeps getting worse and worse and I believe it will be infected if I keep this up. I may have to get help, but if I do our money may not be enough. I try to remember God through all of this; I hope he helps me make the right decision because I feel lost at this time.
