The afternoon of September 28th was warm and the fall breeze blew around me. The warmth of the autumn sun as I walked up a flight of stairs to the pristine white building that houses Heer Mortuary. The tall white pillars lining the front made a nice contrast from the lush greenery on the lawn. There was a peaceful change in the atmosphere even just standing there, waiting at the front door. This compared to the bustle of people driving past the mortuary through a construction zone, just a few paces from the building on Platte Avenue. The white door was locked to outside visitors, and I had to ring the doorbell, and when no one answered, I had to call in order to get in. Heer Mortuary hasn't always been in Don’s family. The building that houses the mortuary today, was originally built as a residence. The Heer family bought the building in the 1940’s, and started the business. Back then Heer Mortuary was one of two funeral homes in the small farming town of Fort Morgan. One day, while fishing, the owners of the two mortuaries decided that it would make for better business if the two companies were to combine. They then became partners, and the new joint operation was relocated to where it is now. Heer’s family ran the mortuary with Mr. Jollif, who managed it until Don graduated from college. In college, Don studied Mortuary Science. He told me that he had always wanted to be a doctor, but he wasn't smart enough. So he ended up doing this instead. Upon Don’s graduation, they then ran it together until Mr. Jollif retired, and Don bought out Jollif’s portion of the company.
