Personal Narrative-The Injury Of A Soccer Player

Throughout the five years I played soccer, I was not prepared for this injury. I have popped bones out of sockets, sprained ankles, and pulled muscles; but nothing could have prepared me for this injury. Having my bone stick out of my toe was an excruciatingly painful experience that allowed me to appreciate my health and well-being. After losing our first game of the season, we were anxious for the second game against a long-time rival, the Cobras. Kick-off was drawing near, and our coach whistled us in to give us the game plan. I was named starting center back. The game began and went well for the first twenty minutes. Then, one of our passes was cut out; and suddenly, the Cobras were on the counter-attack. I dropped back to defend; the Cobra striker, sprinting to goal, lined up to shoot. I was in a full out sprint to reach his position to block the shot. Once I arrived at the hospital, I was rushed into the emergency room. I received an X-ray to examine if I had any broken or fractured bones and received a dose of morphine to prepare me for the pain that would come next. The nurse took a four-inch needle and injected my bone with an anesthetic to numb the bone. The doctor then proceeded to pull by toe upwards to reposition it back into its original socket. I screamed, cried, and was in agony at the amount of pain that I was experiencing. I received another dose of morphine to ease my pain but could still feel the doctor tugging at my toe and forcefully pushing it into place. When the doctor had finished, I began to relax, but what I feared the most now was how long I would be unable to play soccer. The nurse wrapped my foot, gave me a pair of crutches and a warm blanket, and helped me to my car for the long ride
