Personal Narrative: The Sectionals Tournament

The pressure builds as the fate of my entire wrestling season lies in my hands. The sectionals tournament decides the course of every wrestler’s season. Because of my regular season record, I could advance to districts with only one win. My opponent had beaten me the past two matches, but I knew how to strike in order to take control of the match. The odds still stacked against me as I waited for my match to be called. When I stand in the gym, my senses go wild to take in all of my surroundings. Coaches, fans, and teammates only add the butterflies in my stomach increase, but I try to bat them away. My opponent stood 10 yards away while our match becomes closer. Each wrestler experienced the fate of their season. The sectionals tournament persisted like any other tournament, but we were able to sleep in. As all the teams arrived ready for weigh-ins, I could not help lower my fear level. The 120 weight class was the second smallest of the entire tournament. With only four guys total, I ranked third. This meant that one single match would determine if I moved on to districts. As weigh-ins ended, our team paced to our designated area in the gym to fill our food-craved stomachs. When warm ups came along, I had ran faster than anybody to boost my confidence level. The mats crowded with every wrestler in the building. Moving around prevailed as a challenge because of lack of space. As if I was a robot, I practiced through all the drills that I have executed hundreds of times.
