Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Softball

Ever since I was six years old, I fell in love with a diamond. In the diamond was one heartbeat made up of nine different girls who all had the same passion, which was the game of softball. Every season the same group of girls, some from my high school, and some from other school districts, would get together to enjoy play the game.

For me, being around the same group of girls that shared the same passion, allowed me to form friendships with people I would have not have met otherwise. We learned to work as a team and to support and depend on each other. We also encouraged each other to do try new things because we learned that working as a team, we could do anything we set our minds to. Because of this teamwork, I became a more outgoing person.

Softball also keeps me active and helps me with time-management. The coaches influence me a lot by saying how much passion and enthusiasm they saw in me to keep learning more each day. I strive to work towards my goal of getting better at the softball. I started playing on a recreational league and after a couple of seasons, I turned out to be one of the better players. After a while, I realized that the recreation league could not teach me anything new, and the competition was becoming extremely easy, so I wanted a new challenge. So the next season, I joined a tournament league.

So I asked the President of my recreational league if I could help coach a six year old girls’ softball team. He agreed and all the girls loved having a role model there that is not a typical coach. Watching them smile and work as a team made me remember why I am so passionate about the game. It is not always about getting the out or hitting a homerun, it is about working together and sporting one another.
