Personal Narrative: The Varsity Football Team

In my junior year of high school, I made it onto the varsity football team for Archbishop Riordan High School. Our school’s performance had been something to be desired in the past years. This particular year, it was going to be different. Our seniors possessed the talent and we hired new coaches that would lead us to victory. With a new head coach calling the shots and offensive coach who played to our strengths, we accomplished the improbable and made it to the finals.
Sadly, we failed to come out victorious when the clock read 0:00 in the final game. We competed against a team we beat handily during the preseason, Sacred Heart Prep. This fact made it a devastating and disparaging loss for all of us. The seniors completed their stellar season

In this case, the seniors possessed the talent. Many worked for 4 years to get to this point. Not only were they in the playoffs, they reached the finals! Instead of watching the senior players, the sideline, mostly juniors, should have showed more support and contribute towards this goal. When things were looking grim, we could have cheered harder, show more faith in them, and just be better teammates. After the seniors graduated, this left the responsibility to move the program in a forward direction squarely on the shoulders of the junior class. We knew we had to foster a better team attitude.
I learned a very important life lesson that day. The grind and determination do not diminish until the final goal is achieved. The work does not stop until the goal becomes an accomplishment. More importantly, I also learned there are situations where everyone's performance matters whether it is on the field or off the field. It is called a teamwork for a reason. In a team, everyone’s input matters. You cannot rely on the main characters. Even a supporting character must work as hard as the stars so everyone can shine brighter. That is what makes a team win.
