Personal Narrative: The Varsity Soccer Team

I stand before the mirror; it is two hours before the whistle blows to start one of the varsity soccer team’s biggest games this season. After tying my ponytail tighter, I place down the brush and reach for my laptop to raise the volume louder. Belting the chorus to “Eye of the Tiger”, I dance myself into my uniform shorts. For me, this is just another day going through the motions of the pre-game routine I had known all my life. Driving to the field in my father’s Jeep Wrangler, as the top roof is down, I enjoy the refreshing breeze through my flyaway hairs. Arriving in the parking lot, adrenaline raises; I get out of the car and anxiously sprint towards the bench to join my team for warm-ups. I heard a loud crack, as my vision dazed and I completely fell backwards. Initially, lying with my head faced up at the stars, I knew this was not a typical injury. Despite the pain, raised with the mentality to always “stand up quicker than you fall down”, I stood ready to continue playing. Yet due to regulation rules, I was forced to come off the field and disappointedly limped to the bench. My teammates surrounded me and though thankful for their concerns, I was not seeking for pity, but rather the coach’s first-aid kit to find ace bandage.
