Personal Narrative: Tom Davis's Contributions

I walked past his name every Friday night when I went to Livingston Academy’s football games, yet I never knew who he was or why he was so important until this year. There are many men and women in Tennessee who deserve to be recognized, but I believe Tom Davis is a hero every Tennessean and even American should know about. The Tom Davis Memorial Stadium was just a grandstand that was named after a solider to me until I realized what it truly meant. Tom Davis captures the heart of what makes America so great. A small town boy from a rural area serving his country to ensure his family’s freedom.

Tom Davis was born on June the 1st in 1936 in Livingston, TN. He more than likely spent his high school years doing the same things I enjoy doing. Davis was very athletic and competitive like me. He enjoyed playing football for Livingston Academy. He was probably just as excited his senior year to begin college at Tennessee Tech University as I am. He found the love of his life Geraldine while still in school. Davis loved to be outdoors and probably fished in some of the same lakes that I have fished in. His early life was very similar to mine but that what makes his story so special to me. It’s amazing to me that such a heroic man lived the same lifestyle as me.

America became involved under President Kennedy’s office. The early years were mainly special units who were different then the Vietnam soldiers we remember today. Tom Davis was one of the early men in the war. He was apart of Special Unit Four whose mission was to monitor conversations communicated through radios and report back to United State Intelligences. He was placed in this unit after completing basic training and scoring very high on multiple tests. He was then trained for the job that took his life: Radio Direction Finding Intercept
