Fourteen years ago, my family and I entered the United States as undocumented immigrants from Mexico fleeing economic desperation and fear of gang-related violence. Since then, I have had to go through the process of acclimation and integration into American society at a time where preconceived misconceptions about immigration and immigrant motives were widespread. I quickly learned that there were societal expectations set in place on what an immigrant, particularly an “illegal alien”, is expected to behave like or aspire to become.
