Views From the Three One Six

After spending the last 4 hours in our 2006 Honda Accord, a car which has been puked in more times than Kim Kardashian has been married we had finally arrived at Dixie State University. After an entire summer of anticipation it was finally time for me to do something I had helped my older siblings, Parker and Hilarie, who both went to Utah State do several years earlier, move to college. Casey, my step father, quietly utters “we’re here” a welcome answer after playing the “are we there yet” game for almost the entire journey. Well, my father, who lives in St. George just so happens to be an Academic Advisor at the University which allows me to get free tuition and save a bit of money in a world where everyone and their dog has at least an associate's degree. If you want a high end job a college degree has become an almost required part of a resume, something not the case even 20 years ago. The goal here is not to spend 4 years in the oven they call Southern Utah but to get excellent grades and transfer to the University of my, well my mother's dreams. BYU, the pinnacle of success for a young mormon adult, also a place where every other 18 year old has an engagement ring on their finger. After I finally finish unpacking my things I walk back outside with my parents, my mother ginger says “can we take you to lunch bud?” trying not to offend her I reply “I think i'm good thanks though, I would really like to go settle in with my roommates.” I give her a big hug and just like that my parents leave. For the first time in my life I would finally be alone, making decisions on my own, cooking for myself, even doing laundry without my mother's help, a welcome change after being under her wing for the last 18 years.
