We are now in the Cherokee Nation. Captain Clardy stopped us next to a house and ordered them to make up food. The youngest girl in the family was stubborn, yet she was the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. While I was inside eating, I had learned that her name was Lucy Washbourne. Her father, Levi, was a captain in Watie's Confederate Cherokee cavalry. Lucy wouldn't talk to me so I stopped. I didn't want the girl to wipe her feet on me. We didn't stay long in the Cherokee Nation. We had to go to Fort Scott because the enemy was invading the Union Army. As we approached Prairie Grove, we were in an open field.
