Personal Narrative: Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Well behaved women rarely make history.” This quote has a significant meaning to me, and is one reason I am the person who I have become. It will never be a goal of mine to be seen as well behaved, especially as a woman. If it wasn’t for the women who didn’t follow by the standards of society, we wouldn’t have the 19th amendment. Which is the most important part of the constitution to me, because it grants me the right to vote, and was the start of a chain reaction for women’s rights in the United States.

In many cases of rape, there are many verdicts based on the victim's clothing, their state of intoxication, or their precautions that many don’t see fit. To dismiss a defendant on such cases are often favoring men. Typically, because people see men as incapable of controlling themselves. This is such a passionate topic for me because of two incidents that happened to me during high school. I was sexually assaulted by a classmate, and both times I reported the incident, nothing was done because I didn’t “show enough distress” and because I didn’t put enough boundaries down with this man. I was told that I should never have any type of physical contact with him, who was a good friend of mine, because he wouldn’t be able to control himself. After those emotional events in my life, I began speaking out more in times where I believe that sexism is taking place. Such as in high school dress codes, which to me are seen as an interruption to a girl’s learning because they feel a boy would not be able to control themselves. In such a case, they are teaching a young girl that guys are more entitled to their education then they
