What 4-H has Taught Me
4-H has taught me a great deal about agriculture. I have been involved in 4-H since the 5th grade when we moved to Carrizo Springs. My mom and dad were both highly involved in 4-H during their youth and felt that it was a significant learning environment. Cattle were my main focus during my years of 4-H, they taught me that the agricultural industry relies on and revolves around many types of businesses and lifestyles. For example; cattle eat grain and hay, so ranchers have to rely on the farmer to bring in a bumper crop of grain and hay at a reasonable price. Diesel mechanics are always in high demand. Through my families’ involvement in 4-H, I have been able to meet several owners of tractor dealerships and CAT dealerships. While visiting with them, I asked where they thought the best diesel education could be obtained. Most everyone suggested OSUIT because of its hands-on contact with the industry. One such company owner that I talked to even went so far as to say he would always hire a 4-H or FFA person before he would the next applicant because they usually have a much better work ethic. He has found that those employees usually have a much better understanding about real life and what the industry needs and the amount of work that is necessary for the agricultural industry. Careers in agriculture are not your 9am to 5pm type job, and sometimes during certain times of the year, very labor intensive. Every student at OSUIT must have a sponsor from a dealership, after each semester, the students return to their sponsoring dealership and apply the skills learned while at college. OSU college instructors evaluate our work while at the dealership. This is a 2-year program which includes all the basic college courses like, English, History, Government, Math, and Economics. Subsequently, I was able to do all of those courses through the High School dual credit program I hope to be able to do 2 programs while at
