Personal Narrative: What I Learned To Leave New Paltz

I am writing this letter to address the difficult decision I made to leave New Paltz and my readiness to return now. With mounting pressure from my course load piled onto my personal struggle with depression, I needed to do what was best for me, which was to temporarily suspend my academic career and focus entirely on my wellbeing. It was a particularly difficult decision because I’ve always felt that my education is important and also necessary to have a successful career in the field of international relations. My performance in school suffered enormously and I did not fully appreciate or have the ability to take in my courses because I was heavily burdened by my depression, but since leaving New Paltz, I have put my life back on track.

I have taken the time to assess my diagnosis of depression and focus on creating a routine to combat the symptoms by drastically changing my lifestyle, making healthier choices every day. In addition to taking care of myself, I’ve focused on building a career. I followed him onto job sites and reviewed the daily functions of his company. I gained experience in managing a business, finance and accounting, and leadership. He taught me not only the tools of the trade but also what it would take if I decided to take over his company. If I didn’t go back to school, I have a very profitable career at a business I can take over within the next five years. But it isn’t what I want. I’ve always had a strong interest in international affairs and economic development, since I was a high schooler leading Youth Ending Hunger or Save the Children and as a member of Amnesty International and Human Rights Club at New Paltz, and I hope to find a career in
