Personal Narrative: Working With Kids

This summer I was rescued from my previous summer job as a member of the staff of a fast food chain to do something I’ve loved since I was a preteen—working with children. I was an assistant teacher at a daycare working with kids from infancy to elementary school, but mainly focusing on two years old and three to five years classes. When I tell people this it elicits extreme reactions: “You’re so lucky! I love kids,” and “Oh my god, that’s horrible. I’m sorry!” are both common. And, even though, I enjoy teaching kids I have felt both of those emotions.
