I like your post abut volunteering experience, because I have the same experience after I got my associate degree on clinical hemodialysis friend of mine advice me to do some volunteer hours in the clinic, I did exactly what she told me, I have learned a lot, after three months I got a job in the same clinic and am still working for them, and I enjoy what I am doing because its involve helping patients with end-stage renal disease.
Volunteering helps you find different companies and give you an idea and expose you to join some organizations and helping you to be a member with excellent skills.
