Have you ever had someone criticize the music you love listening to because they don’t like it or think that the lyrics are bad? It happens a lot now more than ever with all the different types of music there are. But rap music is the one that they criticize the most. Ever since rap music has been introduced into the world there has been a big controversy over the sexual references and explicit lyrics each song portrays. While some people agree the lyrics in the songs have a strong message the others strongly disagree. I am a big rap music fan. I have been listening to it ever since I had my first IPod. When they rap about drugs and sex; that’s what they do, they’re just telling the truth. It’s just like when a country singer writes a song about their girlfriend/boyfriend cheating on them. They tell you what is happening in their lives, not only because it’s a good way for them to get over it but because it makes the song better. If song writers came out with songs that were all lies the song would be terrible. It shows originality and also what the artist lives like. So when you hear a rap song and the artist is talking about girls in his hot tub he probably has girls in his hot tub. He is just portraying to us his life. This also helps the message they are trying to get out to the listeners. Rap music has actual meanings to each song. With each song there is a message that is trying to be portrayed. A lot of the music has positive messages in it and can be influential to others.
Peter Walker states in his newspaper article Positive Lyrics Can Hit Home With Grumpy Teenagers “music containing a positive message has a beneficial impact on listeners.” The article tells us about an experiment with rap music that has a positive message. They had someone drop a pencil box and had the pencils spill, the ones who listened to the positive rap helped pick up the pencils while the others who didn’t just stood by.
