You hear it almost every time you make a visit to the zoo, “I feel bad for the animals”. It’s almost as if everyone knows it is wrong, but we all love the zoo, and love being able to see such exotic and dangerous animals whenever we want. Zoos have been around since the 1800s, but due to research people have grown more and more skeptical on whether or not we should have them anymore. We have this intimate connection to animals, but are we willing to give up something that has been around for centuries, that everyone loves, for the well being of the animals. The problem with zoos and aquariums is with recent researches and studies, light has been shed on the extreme issues that keeping animals in captivity can cause. People can no longer deny the staggering facts of the struggles animals are enduring in zoos. The case against zoos is as strong as its ever been, people are finally able to understand the true cruelty our beloved animals go through in captivity and are ready to make a change that has been well needed for quite some time. Not only is it extremely dangerous taking the animals out of the wild, but the risks of the animals getting specific disorders and diseases that come along with living in captivity. Zoochosis is something I found out about when researching for this paper, and when I look back at the many times I have been to the zoo, I feel as though I have noticed the disturbing symptoms of it in person. It’s not fair to let these animals live their lives with a disorder like this, and its especially not okay to not educate the public, and the common zoo goers about it.
