“Age is merely just a number.” This a common phrase spoken by many teens who want independence and by middle-aged adults who want their youth back, because their age makes them feel old. But what is age? Age may be just a number, but along with age comes maturity, significant life choices, and more freedom. One significant age in a lifetime is eighteen; a minor becomes an adult, separated from their parents, and are entirely free and on their own, if they so choose to be. During this time in a teens life, they become medically emancipated, meaning one is free to make their own medical decisions, but prior to this age, all of a minor's medical decisions remain in the hands of their parents/legal guardians. When you are able to drive you have many decisions on where to go and what to do. I believe as a sixteen year old if you are trusted to drive in which is extremely dangerous and you need to be mature then you should be allowed to drive yourself to a medical appointment/treatment/surgery without consent of a parent. In “My Sister’s Keeper” Anna has begun to file a lawsuit against her parents and at the time Campbell’s (the lawyer) assistant asks “No way are you representing her? Do her parents know?” Campbell then replies with “No, but they will tomorrow” (Picoult page 28). This quote shows that Anna knows what she is doing and she has taken herself to do it in terms of privacy, if Anna takes the time to find a lawyer and has sufficient evidence to get the lawyer to accept her shows her maturity. According to ABC Eyewitness 13 News states that teen’s parents are forcing her to abort in Houston, Texas. The teen has the ability and responsibility to drive to her appointments and take the medical advancements to have the baby so the teen should be allowed to keep her baby if she is already able to take the measures to get herself to the appointments. The sixteen year old teen fought for her child and took her parents to court who in the end agreed to let their daughter not have an abortion; as it was her body, and her choice; which is what every parent should
