Breastfeeding has been a hot topic lately, especially in social experiments. Most people who are nonplussed by seeing photos of scantily clad models with barely there clothing and exposed cleavage, are suddenly disgusted when breasts are being used for their natural purpose: feeding a child. It seems rather ridiculous that it is deemed shameful to feed your child in public, with no more exposed than the model in a string bikini. A woman should be able to feed her child with the child’s needs in mind as well, because the child is what is important. However, some people are offended when they see a woman breastfeeding in public, because they deem it shameful or unsanitary, or they feel that a woman could go into a restroom to feed their child. If people are okay with seeing a majority of exposed breasts and cleavage on an advertisement or on television, then seeing a baby feeding at its mother’s breast should not be an issue.
In the first place, breastfeeding is a biological part of life, and unless there are medical issues that prevent it, should be started right after birth for the greatest nutritional benefit for both mother and child. Not only are you feeding your child, you are not performing any kind of strip tease, or anything sexual. The public should not sexualize the act of breastfeeding because there is nothing remotely sexual being done. Not to mention that no one considers a toddler or older child to be doing something shameful by eating or drinking in public, and an infant should be treated similarly because they are getting nourishment, the same as an older child would be doing.
