The Florida House of Representatives recently signed HB191, better knows as the Fracking Bill. This bill will make it easier for large corporations to begin fracking in the state of Florida. Because of this bill, Florida will permit fracking to occur from Ft. Myers to the Everglades. Fracking is a process that is detrimental to the environment, and must not be allowed to begin. Everyone needs to help stop this law from being enforced. However, before anything can be done, people should first know what fracking is and the harm that it does to the environment. Fracking is the process of drilling fluid into the ground at a high pressure to fracture shale rocks and release natural gas that is inside of it. In HB 191 there are no zoning laws that would prohibit fracking from occurring. Even though the bill that has been written only applies to hydraulic fracking, the fracking that happens in Florida is called acidization. Water becomes contaminated, when chemicals are forced into the bedrock and get into the ground water. Another negative aftereffect of fracking is that animals that drink contaminated water may become ill and die. Fracking sites can also destroy the habitat of an animal. People can become involved in halting fracking in different ways. One way is for people to contact their local government representatives and explain to them the concerns about fracking.
